Macro and micronutrients by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy

Macro and micronutrients in rice grain is one of the important factors that affect quality. Different countries in the world face varying nutritional needs depending on their dietary preference, socioeconomic, and environmental condition. Breeding efforts are being made to address and improve rice nutritive value.

Inductively Coupled Plasma–Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) is used to determine trace elements in the solution. All solid matrices need acid digestion prior to analysis. An internal standard could also be used and should be matrix-matched with the standards. If an internal standard is used, the instrument software should be programmed to correct intensity differences between samples and standards. The following analytes have been determined through this method: Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, K, Na, S, and Zn.


Note: To determine macro and micronutrients, the sample weight required is at least 4 g of milled rice or 3 g of rice flour placed in a paper bag. In order to keep the integrity of the customers' samples, senders are requested to place them in secure plastic boxes.
